Food to avoid

Soy and Soy Products: Soy contains compounds called goitrogens that can interfere with thyroid function. While moderate soy consumption is generally fine for most people, excessive intake might be problematic for those with hypothyroidism.

Cruciferous Vegetables: Vegetables like broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, and Brussels sprouts also contain goitrogens. These can potentially affect thyroid function when consumed raw. However, steaming and cooking these vegetables can reduce the goitrogen content and make them safe to eat.

Processed Foods: Highly processed foods, especially those high in refined sugars and unhealthy fats, can negatively impact metabolism and overall health. They might also contribute to weight gain, which can be a concern for individuals with hypothyroidism.

Gluten: Some people with hypothyroidism also have an autoimmune condition called Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, which is often associated with gluten sensitivity. If you suspect gluten might be an issue for you, consider discussing it with your healthcare provider.

Excessive Iodine: While iodine is essential for thyroid function, excessive intake can be detrimental, especially for individuals with hypothyroidism. Consult your doctor to determine if you need iodine supplements or should adjust your diet.

Fatty Foods: High-fat diets, particularly those containing unhealthy fats, might interfere with thyroid hormone production and absorption. It’s generally a good idea to choose healthy fats like those found in avocados, nuts, seeds, and fatty fish.

Caffeine and Alcohol: These substances can potentially interfere with thyroid hormone synthesis and absorption, so it’s advisable to consume them in moderation.
